10th May 2007 - 7.5 minutes action in 3.5 hours of golf! It's a great observation that often applies to business.
It's often said that a round of golf is a pleasant long walk occasionaly interupted by some minimal exertion and punctuated by a little bad language muttered under ones breath. To the good golfers, the pertinent point being that there's only 7.5 minutes that really count and make the difference between success and failure.
The is a direct parallel with business. Much of the time is spent doing things that don't really make a huge difference between us and our competitors, there's actually only a small percentage of activities, covering a small amount of time where battles are won and lost. Part of the skill of the winners is recognising when the '7.5 minutes' is taking place! When are the key points? Do we recognise the moments when opportunity knocks? If we do, these are the times to shut everything else out and make things happen. The 'also runs' in life either don't recognise the moment, or when they do, they don't do anything differently.
There are a lot of principles at stake here. For those that don't recognise that the 'key' moments are only na small portion of time, but they are desparate to succeed, they can walk around extremely wound up, stressed and heading to an early grave. It's impossible to maintain Defcon 4 all of the time! For those that work fratlek style putting in random sprints periodically, it's all very well but you may miss the key moments!
The moral is to take a little time to recognise the key moments in your business that make a difference...when a particualr type of enquiry comes in....when you client is at their annual renewal...when a customer calls in threatening to leave..whatever your list, this may allow you to relax a little when it doesn't matter so much, knowing you know where the pedal is when you need to hit the gas.
