15th May 2007 - Clean Desk, clean mind!

It's an old habit from student days but I do like to have a very large desk to work at.  Unfortunately this has dangerous side effect, I tend to accumulate paperwork into lost of little piles until eventually you couldn't tell me what colour the desk is. 

I think the intial thought on creation of the next 'pile' is that if it remains in view I won't forget it and it'll get done...whatever it is.  The problem with this is ending up having so many piles that nothing in particular has 'priority' and nothing then gets done.  In addition, I'm forever telling people we only have 6-9 'boxes' in our short term memorym and once these are occupied there's no rooom left for conscious processing of problems.  All my little piles tend to fill these boxes without me realising.

I've just spent a good hour going through it all and clearing it, some in the bin, some filed, and some creating task on the PC.  At the end of it all I'm left with a clear desk, clear head and mind with a few extra tasks on the list!

The moral, don't let clutter build up, it interferes with conscious thought.  Either, file it, bin it, or do what ever it is there and then!
