19th April 2007 - If in doubt, sleep on it! Business is a long line of difficult and sometimes confuding decisions. Contrary to what you may sometimes think and indeed feel, very few are required in 'acute' timescales.
Yesterday I was going through one of my regular brainstorming sessions, churning large amounts of figures with concepts applied to the business, phoning people for second opinions and scribbling stuff all over flipchats and pages in my note pad.
This is all very healthy stuff, running through 'what ifs' in your head, on paper and in discussions with friends and colleagues is all risk free testing of ways to move forwards. The trouble is that if you proceed to make decisions in the direct aftermath, the pot of ideas and potential actions is all a bit 'hubble bubble boil and trouble'! In all the confusion, if your not careful you can end up running with an idea based on an emotional, not a rational decision....the idea you thought of last can sometimes seem most appealing, or the one your mate got the most excited about, or the one you had coincidentally just after you made a sale, and endorphins were flowing through your veins, none of these are really sound foundations to base key decisions on.
Entrepreneurs an generally an impatient bunch desparate to move on an make a difference. In reality, few decisiosns and 'really' acute ones. In most cases, the time lost in a 24 hour delay is far outweighed by the gain in wisdom a complete break form the sceanrio can create a day's wait. The psychologists will tell you your brain is processing information while you sleep. It's surely true that we've all woken up with a solution to problem when we clearly weren't consciously processing information through the night.
In my experience, the mash of information churned the day before nearly always falls into some semblemce of a rational order given a break away from the choatic process of problem solving. So enjoy the choas of problem solving in all it's glory, but sleep on it before you make final key decisions, it's always much clearer when the sun rises!
