20th April 2007 - No, there really are enough hours in the day. How many times do you here people moan there are not enough hours in the day, tosh!

Don't get me wrong, I don't like working long hours any more than you do.  With 3 children and some good hobbies I'd happily pursue all day, work is a necessary evil.  But it makes me cross when I here people moaning that they are struggling because there are not enough hours in the day.

Business, in all it's forms, is competitve.  All other things being equal, if you get up earlier in the morning than your competitors, you will do more business!!  Most people struggle to get out of bed for work in the morning, but equally find it comparatively easy to get up at 4am to catch a plane to some exotic location for a holiday.  On these occasions, it can be surprising how little impact on the day the early rising has had.  Perhaps a little more tired a little earlier in the evening....followed by a heavier nights sleep to catch up?  It quite simply comes down to motivation and how much you want/need the results.

There are some great examples in history of extreme cases of this.  Magaret Thatcher in her years at No.10 was reported to get no more than 3/4 hours sleep per night!! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it!  But lets face it, she had a lot to do.  She's now in her 80s and relatatively healthy, so it's hardly sent her to an early grave.

The point is, I believe none of us really needs the amount of sleep we usually get.  In most cases, the amount we sleep given a free reign will always be more than we really need....try asking new parents! Certainly on a short term basis, a little less sleep won't do you any harm at all....so use this to your competitve advantage.  When the chips are down, and works getting heavy, try getting up and hour or even two earlier, you'll like the results.  Early mornings are generally quiet, undisturbed periods where lots can be achieved before your competitors have had chance to brush their teeth.
