27th April 2007 - Put first things first, and then get on with it!

Yesterday was an odd day, through 75% of it, it was all going pear shaped, a laptop in turmoil and customerss causing trouble.  The problem when it's all kicking off, is that the 'general feel' of the situation (frustration doom and gloom) can impair your ability to deal with the issues in hand, particualrly if the issues in hand are negative, rather than positive.

Having left the office the night before with a laptop undergoing a remedial fix, I arrived to see it near death, unable to muster a move of the cursor at my command.  In addition, one customer appears to to be getting results and assuming it's our fault, when in fact they haven't been using it properly, and another client of high value is behaving rather erratically and leaving us with some patching up to do with our contractors....as a final thump in the solar plexus the supoplier of our internet sites hasn't responded to an urgent problme, costing us dearly...he's on holiday for the week!

At the end of the day, all this sort of rubbish is part and parcel of being in business.  An whilst all of these issue and the ensuing activities don't seem productive at generating business, while they remain unptackled and not resolved, they are preventing you from doing the things that do make you money. 

Ultimately, you can't let it get you down.  You just need to return to putting tasks in priority order and tackle them one by one.  Once you've prioritised and started, deal with the problem at the top in exclusion of the rest, put them out of your mind, don't let them interfere.  The good news is, all of this tends to balance out.  By the end of the day, We landed an unexpected and sizeable deal out of the blue, the laptop is quicker than it's ever been, and we uncovered some really usefull information for our meeting with the customer on Monday.

The reaosn for writing this log, is that a couple of years back I wouldn't have responded in the same way.  today, once the laptop died, I sacrificed the whole morning to drive away to get it fixed immediately...it was a pain and a negative job that I hadn't planned for, by extremely imporant to rectify it.  I didn't enjoy the change of plan or the trip to fix it, but it was fixed in time to capitalise on the opportunties which presented at the end of the day.

 A couple of years ago, I would have tried to carry on with my plan, hoping to try and find the problem whilst continuing with the more positive tasks on my list....I would have gone the whole day being highly unproductive, neither solving the problem or able to give full attention to other tasks and opportunities,  and the problem likely spilling over until the next day.
