Revamped older people's services could save 800 lives

Up to 800 older people's lives a year could be saved, and thousands more helped to remain independent, if health services follow a five point plan published in a new report by Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People.

According to Professor Philp, the UK's increasingly ageing population means that the NHS and social care systems need to change in order for older people to get the best possible care.

The report states that 65 percent of hospital beds on any given day are occupied by the over 65s, yet the exisiting services were not designed with older people's needs in mind. Improving and reorganising services to better meet their needs will not only save lives, but could also save every strategic health authority up to £5m every year.

Professor Philp suggests a plan to change older people's services for the better through:

  • intervening early, for example to help people recover from falls
  • anticipating and coordinating the needs of people with long term conditions such as diabetes or asthma
  • releasing patients earlier from hospital and offering more support at home
  • providing acute hospital care when needed
  • partnership working between all the agencies involved in older people's care.

This report also includes personal accounts of how change in the NHS has already made a difference for patients.

Professor Philp said: "There are already many excellent examples of care for older people being delivered in new and different ways and settings and my report makes clear that this needs to be rolled out across the country."
