Recruitment jobs or Managing Director?
In the recruitment to recruitment sector there appears to be a growing trend of recruitment consultants taking their success in employment and setting up their recruitment to recruitment agency.
Jobs in recruitment are challenging affairs for the best of us. They are dynamic with challenging targets, and the pressure to find good recruitment consutlants to fill an array of recruitment vacancies is unrelenting.
That said, if a recruitment job really is your cup of tea, the rewards can be fantastic, with some roles paying 50% commission on placements once beyond a basic threshold. With placement fees anywhere from £3000 up to £20000 and beyond, that's a lot of potential for bonus!
No matter how good the rewards a recruitment consultant is able to earn, the day will eventually come when they consider what happens to the other 50% of what they earn! The natural progression from here is...shouldn't I be doing this for myself! Well, it's not really that simple is it. Few recruitment jobs actually involve the 'whole' role, for example, most jobs in recruitment come with an established client base providing a steady stream of recruimtent vacancies. Most recruitment agencies have an established candidate database and a strong advertising budget in place. All or many of these can be absent if you go it alone, meaning performance will likely be much less than in an employed job in recruitment. that said, when you're taking 100% of the fees, you only need to do half as well to stand still.
The good news is, in the recruitment to recruitment sector, business development is not such a tough task, so establishing a client base is not such an issue. Advertising is another matter. It's a fiercely competitve market for candidates meaning rec 2 rec companies have huge advertising budgets, so competing here can be tough.
Running a business requires a whole new set of skills, so being a successful recruitment consultant will not necessarily indicate that a conversion to managing director will suit. There's plenty of advice out there, books and articles on the internet to help you establish if this is something that will suit you or not. Which ever route yuo choose, good luck! The recruitment sector is still growing like a train, so it's not a bad place to be.
