New EU laws on Medical sales advertising
Under new EU laws medical sales companies will be able to advertise directly to pateints just as they have in the USA since 1997.
It's a decision which has horrified the British Medical Association with the thought of Doctors everywhere being flooded by patients demanding treatments they have seen advertised. Apart from the possibly that patients will be demanding things which may be wholly inappropriate there is also the prospect that the demands will be for products otherwise un-affordable in todays struggling NHS.
Medical sales companies have always been high on ethics but have also always had the buffer of the Doctor between them and the end user of their products. This change in law will alter the entire dynamics of medical sales.
A word of warning for medical sales companies from the USA. After 1997 they spent billions on advertising, it was only years later that research determined this completely ineffective with most patients realising the obvious bias of the adverts and preferring to take the advice of their GP! Although many medical sales companies will be forced into spending sums on this, judgeing by the states, it could all be a bit of a Red Herring!
